Vindolanda and the Romans

With the beautiful weather we have been having up here in Northumberland it was time that we revisited Vindolanda. It is literally just south of Sycamour gap ( the Robin Hood tree) and as always the site remains impressive.
Built around 82 AD that is a full 40 years before Hadrian' Wall it remains , arguably, the greatest attraction in the area. Certainly the thin slivers of wood covered in spidery writing which record the thoughts and deeds of bygone romans is one of the Nations greatest treasures.

These are some of the pictures we took

Firstly the baths at Vindolanda, and the amazing underfloor systems the Romans built

Then of course the communal toilets. Just about the oldest toilet we have seen.

On their first trip to Vindolanda not many people will have heard of Chesterholme or the museum which is housed there.

and then on the way back round Vindolanda there is the reconstruction of Hadrians Wall and a typical Roman fort. This photo shows the darkening clouds at the end of a perfect day

If you would like to visit Vindolanda then have a look at some of the late availability cottages close to Hadrians Wall. Click here for a full list.

and finally a short video
